Today is the designated International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.  Chosen to mark the anniversary of the murder of the Mirabel sisters – by the Trujillo regime in Dominica in 1960 – this day marks the beginning of 16 Days of Global Activism to End Gender Violence.

Etobicoke Humane Society

The Etobicoke Humane Society, a Toronto animal shelter which takes in abused, neglected, abandoned, surrendered and injured animals is facing closure due to their financial state. They have been running for 25 years, are volunteer run, run solely on donations but face possible closure in the next 2-3 months.

The members of SEEDS Me to We have decided to support the Humane Society.  They will be holding a Bake Sale this Thursday, November 27th in support.  There is also a donation box located beside the Circulation Desk in the Library.

Additional information may be found by following these links:

If you live in Etobicoke, please consider becoming a monthly donor or a shelter volunteer.  100% of all donations go directly into animal care and operations. Your donation will provide shelter, vaccinations, food and emergency medical attention.

Women’s Habitat

Please join us in the Library at lunch today for a special presentation, on Domestic Violence, with our friends from Women’s Habitat.

  • The session will also feature one of our own ESA students, and her mom, who are going to share their own personal experience with us.

This will be an informative, and emotional, session. Bring your lunch and join us at the start of the lunchhour.

The Library will be closed to all but those attending this session.

Later update:  Reminder about the Twitter hashtag started by recently retired Toronto Star reported Antonia Zerbiasis…  #BeenRapedNeverReported.

Read an article about it at CTV News.

Also check their PSA video on YouTube – produced pro bono – which ran on CBC and other select media outlets.

Women’s Habitat is looking for volunteers to help set-up and tear-down for their Christmas Holiday Party for teens, as well as their Christmas hamper programme.  Fill out the volunteer application form if you are able to help.  Please indicate that you are with the ESA Equity group if you attended the session in the Library today.
